Global Realities - Diptych

Description

Global Realities is a statement piece that is geared towards bringing the viewer closer to the homes and environments of the impoverished, third world countries of the world where violence and the need to voice and act on power takes a higher role in the mindsets of some, while others focus on surviving and staying at peace and just trying to grow out of the world they were born in, to hope for a better place one day, or to hope that they can stand and create that better place. “Extermination” is the piece in which it was created from the events read in the New York Times about a series of attacks by criminals and rebels in the country of Nigeria where women, children and the elderly were killed and villages were set ablaze, all of which is common nature between the ongoing struggle of Fulani herdsmen and local farmers. Their homes are never made of anything more permanent than what can be found around them, as the background of the painting, shows the stucco-esque nature of dirt, sand, rocks and cement used to create their homes, which are anything but permanent, as even the nature around them can deteriorate them over time, but then, add the violent nature of the conflicts and they could be destroyed in the blink of an eye. The word is made with a blood-like liquid of mediums, in order to show that maintaining a lifestyle like this could only lead pain, injury and potentially death. Then, on the other canvas, “Endurance” you have the victims of these violent acts that only want to survive, and want to do something, or build something, like their homes, to be of permanent nature. In the article, you would hear about the mothers of the children, trying to cover the children with their own body, in order to save them from harm and prevent them from being a victim of extermination. It’s the will of these individuals that you can see, all they want to do is survive and be a part of the world for as long as they can. In the background of this piece, I used a different type of texture, in which it resembles cement like you would find in more established residences, though still tarnished, but not nearly as temporary as the mud-stucco walls. The letters of this painting are made with a metal like material with facates of gems, and a glow of gold, in order to show symbolize the hopes and dreams of those who want to build for the future, rather than the right now.

Also, the originals are for sale, as a set, for $1,000.  All profits made from this sale will go to Habitat for Humanity, International, as this piece was made to inform, and hopefully will also be made to help a great cause.
